Cher Odum : Featured Artist

Art Prints

Cher Odum is an artist I have long admired. In her own words Cher says of her artistic journey, “When I began developing my signature style with the big feet, small head, overall distorted body image, and the wild different colored hair in some, I was thinking about women in general. Being a woman myself, and working with women, and especially adolescents, I’ve observed how we all seem to hate what we see in the mirror. Our feet are too big, our bums are outrageously huge, we feel clumsy and awkward (and we are even more so during adolescents), and think so ‘small’ of ourselves; hence the small head.

Art Prints

Note the body proportions of the images and you will see what Cher shows us in her unique paintings. The women are depicted from thoughts of how she sees herself, not how she is seen by others, but how she sees and perceives her own body image. I feel this is very relevant in today’s society where anorexia and such likes are almost the only acceptable forms of beauty young women are taught ARE beautiful and more importantly – acceptable.

Cher goes on to say, “However, we are all beautiful beings, if only we could really see our being-ness. We are wiser than we know. That’s where the pearls come from (pearls of wisdom) and the music I’ve portrayed in some of the paintings. The eyes have a sense of knowing, which comes from being bright beings, and our many different lifetimes here on earth, and in between. In the paintings where the figure is painted, in parts, outside the border, I am showing a breaking out of the box people try to put us in – - and how our being-ness is too large to be contained.”

The “knowing” eyes.

Out of the box – the box that not only we, but society places we as women until the magic starts and a woman breaks free. She frees not only herself, but other women she may come into contact with. We women are very social creatures and whomever thinks one woman cannot make a difference is, in my humble opinion, very wrong.

Photography Prints

Cher Odum adds, “the paintings where the woman is running, leaping, dancing above the mountains and trees show a free spirit – - larger than life – and anything is possible if only we believe it.” Read that again ladies!

Art Prints

Cher certainly knows her color theory and explains her use of it, “The colors that I use most in my work represent success (yellow); life, energy, courage (red); healing, abundance, growth (green); strength, truth (blue); and purity and light (white).”

Ok, I admit, I have found one of my favorites again! There is something in this work that resonates with me on a deep level. I am unsure as to why, but that’s the beauty of art and the artists around us who can create works that pull positive emotions from their viewers. Cher Odum is certainly one of those artists – her entire portfolio has a decidedly positive effect on my thinking, and seeing how others respond to her art makes me think that I am not alone in the way I feel.

Cher also paints abstract. To complete this feature I am leaving off with an abstract painting. I find this very interesting because for me, I still see feminine curves. I am well aware that abstract is seen differently by everyone, but for me, the feminine form comes through even in complete abstract form without any component that could be considered representational.

Different kinds of fine art photography – By Rafal Maleszyk

Different kinds of fine art photography

Author: Rafal Maleszyk Fine Art Photos

What is fine art photography? This is hard to define, what is art? Can it be anything that has been created out of passion, or anything that is beautiful. Not all art is beautiful. This is very wide topic and here I will focus on what kind of fine art photography can we find. Obviously it is not important what is photographed but how it is done. We can see not just a black blurry photos called fine art but very sharp detailed photos of garbage, it seems to me that fine art can be created with anything. In the past famous master artist were able to create art from ugly , gloomy, dark topic today photographers can do it with subjects that can surprise.

In today digital world just creating something that is very real without the over saturation of color, brightness or contrast can be considered fine art. We can find photos of grass or common bushes called fine art only because it has been taken by famous and established artist. This fenomenon has deeper and more important message. Today 90% of the photographic work is over saturated, there is more contrast then in reality, the digital post manipulation even in the photographs that are considered not manipulated is more noticeable then in traditional analog. Art is always looking for new and original and appreciating unique and different, for that reason just creating body of work that shows the reality without minimal addition can be appreciated.

There are photographers that specialize in landscape photography, using newest equipment and producing work that has nothing to do with reality. Work is very bright and unnaturally contrasted with certain feel of digital. People like those kind of pictures, because this either speaks to their imagination or showing that perfect colors, perfect saturation and contrast is possible to do. Others critique this kind of work calling it boring and very common.

Of course there are black and white photography, this is the kind that has started it all. Black and white comes from the roots and is considered the most unique and most powerful by some. It has some unexplainable energy of showing the reality just in two colors. Even though all other colors are excluded this kind of picture can show the emotions, the beauty , surprise, calm down or shock.

Art And Math : Fractal Based Art

My art muse is slowly returning but creates whirl winds of creativity or totally disappears again, only to resume the cycle over and over again.

During this time I have taken to creating some fractals or fractal based artwork, and I am sure that the mathematic workout is helping to stimulate my art muse back into some semblance of creative thinking.

Featured Artist Mel Steinhauer

Mel Steinhauer says in his own words : “My love for photography began as a boy when I was taught the basics by my father. During a tour of duty in Vietnam, I purchased a Nikon camera and dreamed of becoming a photographer. A family and career put that dream on hold, however I always enjoyed taking photographs. Several years ago, after surviving another kind of war with cancer, I began to really see the beauty in our world. Equipped with a new awareness of life and improved photographic vision, I am now able to find beautiful scenes almost everywhere.”

Mel’s words are very true, and his portfolio is complete with an abundance of imagery for my eyes to enjoy; until I post this :)

Photography Prints

On State Road 135 just north of Nashville, somewhere between Indianapolis and Bloomington, I took another trip back in time. This covered bridge was built by Joseph Basley way back in 1880 and it is still in use today. A winding country road that crosses over a small creek takes you back to a small town with the same name. Here is where “The Father of Bluegrass ” country music legend Bill Monroe once called home. One early winter afternoon on my way to a big city, I decided to go a few extra miles just to stop and capture the beauty of the old Bean Blossom Bridge.

Personally, I find the image to be very romantic and am unsure as to why.

Cades Cove is a peaceful valley nestled between the Smoky Mountains near Gatlinburg, Tennessee. In the early 1800s, European immigrants came here to settle down and co-exist with native Cherokee Indians. They called this cove Tsiyahi, or the place of the river otter. Elk, bison and many other wildlife were abundant here as well. A convenient driving tour now takes you to several well preserved homes and churches. This beautiful pathway will lead you into the home of the Oliver family, for long ago they built themselves “A Smoky Mountain Cabin.”

I could easily spend a day here!

Kentucky is famous for many more things than just the world’s best thoroughbred horses and fried chicken. For over 200 years, Kentucky’s distilleries have produced the world’s finest bourbons. In the region just west of Lexington, highly-skilled craftsman have been passing on their secret recipes and processes from one generation to the next. Here you will find the makers of Jim Beam, Wild Turkey, Maker’s Mark, Four Roses, Heaven Hill and Woodford Reserve. The bourbons at Woodford Reserve are triple-distilled in these beautiful copper pots and then carefully aged in charred oak barrels for years. Open to the public for educational tours, tastings and unique gifts, traveling along The Bourbon Trail is a very enjoyable experience. Here you will find proof that the makers of the world’s best bourbons are … Still In Kentucky.

Glorious, sumptuous color!

What is it about pathways that intrigue we humans? Is it a quest to find out where they lead? I don’t know the answer, but I am enjoying this wonderful image with such living color.

In a peaceful valley of the Smoky Mountain National Park in Tennessee, is an area known as Cade’s Cove. Settled by early pioneers who learned to live off the land and build what was needed to survive. In the 1870′s, John Cable built this small grist mill, to grind grain into cornmeal and wheat into flour. A mill flume diverted water from a nearby stream, to turn the wheel and a series of gears which caused the millstone to rotate. Today, tourists can watch history still working at the Cable Grist Mill!

I can see this image as a print on a wall in a study, or somewhere someone wishes to spend time in peaceful thought and meditation.

One of the most photographed locations in Glacier National Park can be found near the East Entrance and the beginning of the Going To The Sun Road. A tiny island on St. Mary’s Lake where legend says a beautiful Indian maiden met a handsome warrior from an opposing tribe. Their love was forbidden and could not be, so they met in secret one night on the island. The Great Spirit heard their prayers and transformed them into geese, who naturally mate for life. Here, their love endured and they lived happily ever after on Wild Goose Island.

Divine imagery!

A trip to Dublin required a brief visit to St. Patrick’s, the National Cathedral of Ireland. Built in the early 13th century, the faithful have worshipped here for over 800 years. On a cloudy and rainy day, scenes inside were much more colorful and appealing. The first Knight was installed on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, 1783. Each Knight would give his banner, a symbolic helmet and sword, to the Cathedral. They were placed above his seat in the choir, where they still remain today, for all to see and to honor the Knights Of St. Patrick’s.

For anyone who has stood amongst such excellent architcxture such as this, they will know the meaning of the words “I feel so small”. If you have never experienced this, it’s very worthwhile. Mel’s interpretative imagery brings to viewers a definite feeling of “being there”.

Art Prints

Just before Christmas in 1968, my unit visited an orphanage in Saigon, on a different kind of mission. There I enjoyed the pleasure of having some time with these wonderful young girls. I was only 19 and had much to learn about everything, so they taught me a few words and how to count in their language. But then I learned so much more than that. Born into a country already at war long before my arrival, they were just innocent victims sharing a common bond. They all dreamed that one day their missing family members would return to them somehow. They all wished that everyone they knew could live without the fears and dangers of war. They all just wanted to play games, have fun and live in peace. I also wanted that for them, these wonderful Children Of Hope.

There is beauty that we see and beauty that we feel, and or see. In this image I have indulged the more emotive side of my own personality to share the beauty of Mel Steinhauer’s Artistic Photography.

The tip of northern Kentucky consists of many different small communities. These friendly little cities are connected to each other along the famous old ” Highway To Dixie ” that runs North to South through Covington, Park Hills, Ft. Wright, Ft. Mitchell, Lakeside Park, Crestview Hills, Edgewood, Erlanger, Elsmere and Florence, just to name a few. When you leave the boundaries of one, you immediately enter into the next community. During emergencies or other times of need, they often rely on help from a nearby friend. At the Ft. Wright Fire Station their simple motto is ” Neighbors Helping Neighbors ” and the men and women who work here are always Ready To Roll.

Are you ready to roll?

Tall buildings in big cities often provide dramatic views of the surrounding area. Cincinnati’s tallest building, the Carew Tower is no exception. Built in 1929, it’s still a grand old building and became a National Historic Landmark in 1994. At a height of 574 feet, the 49th floor observation deck is open to the public for a small fee. From way up here you can see for miles off in the distance, or you can look down on the much shorter buildings nearby. It was very interesting indeed, to see the old within the new, when I saw these beautiful Tower Reflections.

Mel Steinhauer is certainly and extremely diverse artist and it has been by honor to feature him with all my thanks!

Featured Artist Gregory Scott

Gregory Scott became serious about photography is the early 70′s when he did a lot of street photography in Chicago and in his church, Columbus, Ohio. Gregory owned a Nikormat with a F1.4 50mm lens.
Although financial issues kept him from photography for many years until 2003 when he purchased a Canon D60, and two Canon 550EX flashes and a100mm macro lens to capture his beautiful hummingbirds imagery. Soon after Gregory Scott purchased a 28-70 Canon lens for landscapes and a 100-400mm Canon t5.6 for wildlife.

In the words of the artist himself he says, ” I’ve had the best results since 2003 with hummingbirds, and am beginning, after a long learning curve, beginning to achieve real satisfaction with my landscape photography.”

Gregory Scott’s photography is immensely beautiful and I often feel this is one artist who needs someone to tell him how good he is. Many of his bird shots and landscape images leave me breathless, and completely envious of his talent, so like the rest of you, I simply enjoy the journey of his imagery!

Gregory says, “I’m not sure it is a female. I suppose it might be an immature, instead. I liked the classic “spread-eagle” pose on this one. Not that the talons are scary!” No, the talons aren’t scary, but the way the bird holds it’s body in flight is extremely interesting.

While The Art Muse Sleeps : Reworking Unfinished Artwork

Yes, my muse still sleeps, but inspiration comes from many different places, and this time it was works that had been partly completed and cast aside for “later”.  Later never came until now, and in many ways it is a blessing to be able to be inspired by my own cast off art which I have now reworked into prints.

I hope you find something you enjoy viewing.

For some unknown reason, the art muse did kick in for “Stormy Weather” – I don’t know why as much as I often don’t know why my muse goes wandering, but Stormy Weather was heavily inspired in tone by the Master Artist J.M.W. Turner – I often feel inspired by him when I work on a more dramatic level than with my lighter works. I felt a dramaticism and wanted to portray a storm in spring – beauty combined with beautiful harshness and the rush of moving clouds.

Richard Rizzo : Featured Artist

Richard Rizzo opens his portfolio with his own words about why he creates his art and the feelings that arise within during the creative process.

Richard says, “‘What I enjoy most about creating is my imagination running rampant, it frees my thoughts of being constrained to time and place’ – Richard Rizzo”

Photography Prints

Richard Rizzo’s art is full of rich imaginative works which run from the totally sublime right through to classic works of art in his chosen mediums.

Richard Rizzo has been creating art for most of his life, his earliest years during the 1960′s had the most impact on his imagination while living in the NYC area where he witnessed the art culture scene.

Primarily a self taught artist, Richard has worked in many mediums including painting and photography to name a few.

He has been self employed in the decorative arts as a muralist and faux finisher for more then 20 years in both NC and Florida working with many top designers and fellow artisans.

His interest in styles vary but mostly he enjoys minimalist and modern art.

Today in his fifties, digital art has become Richard’s most creative outlet, here he has the ability to transform his most imaginative visions into reality using computer software applications such as Vue, Modo, SketchUp and Photoshop to name a few while constantly experimenting in different styles and techniques as he constantly looks toward the future.

Speaking from experience I can state categorically that the many programs listed above are far from easy to learn, and least of all to create a work worthy of a print.

Richard Rizzo, however, does just that, and does it within a class of his own.

Here are some of his works I hope you will enjoy perusing!

What wonderful memories I have of the days I use to mountain climb, today I try to recreate those thoughts on a digital canvas. Cold Mountain captures the feel of the thawing mountains as the low clouds move between peaks.

To those who do not know the programs used by the artist to create such scenic beauty as above, they are as difficult to utilize as any oil painting or photograph, which is where I always stand in the grey area and say “I am interested in an end product; not in how an artist arrives there.”

In his own words regarding the above work, Richard says “This is one I’m leaving open for interpretation. :-) 3D Digital Art”

It also happens to be another personal favorite.

Art Prints

Photographed using 35mm Kodak High Speed Infrared film. (circa 1997)

Beautiful image with a touch of classy romance – that’s my opinion, anyway.

My many thanks goes to Richard Rizzo for granting me permission to feature a mere fragment of his portfolio. With every artist I feature, I struggle with what works to show you – these artists are so talented and diverse, so the best I can do is show you images and creations that appeal to me. Like all things, art is subjective.

Please be sure and have an extra coffee and visit Richard’s portfolio and I promise, you won’t be disappointed.
